Overview of World Standard Day

World Standards Day is an international anniversary established by the world's three major international standard organizations, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electronical Commission (IEC), and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), to inform the international community of the importance of international standards. Since 1970, it has been held on October 14 every year, and ISO, IEC, and ITU have issued messages of the year on each anniversary, and the 160 member countries affiliated with the international standards organization have held various events by country. This year, the goal is sustainable development that slows climate change by resolving social imbalances and developing a sustainable economy, around a shared vision for a better world.

  • ISO (International Organization for Standardization)
    : ISO is an international organization established in 1946 to standardize industrial standards in all countries, and aims to facilitate international exchange of products and services in various fields and to promote mutual cooperation.
  • IEC (International Electronical Commission)
    : The IEC is an "International Electrical Commission" established in 1906 for the purpose of international unification and coordination of standards for electric technology, with 80 technical committees and has established about 2,000 IEC publications so far.
  • ITU (International Telecommunication Union)
    : ITU is a standardization organization under the United Nations (UN) that oversees international information and communications fields such as telecommunications, radio communications, satellite communications, and broadcasting. ITU is engaged in activities such as development and distribution of rules and standards on wired and wireless communication, radio waves, broadcasting, satellite frequencies, and international coordination and cooperation.

Celebrating World Standards Day 2021 in each country

  • China
    : Based on the theme of the 2021 World Standards Day, China has announced the theme of “Implementing standardization outline to promote high-quality development”. National standards for the sustainable development of cities and communities were published, and videos about the theme and the ISO Excellence Award winners were played on this celebration event.
  • Vietnam
    : The Vietnam Ministry of Science and Technology has organized a celebration of World Standards Day to raise awareness among stakeholders about the contribution of standards to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. At the celebration, associations, businesses, and local communities shared their thoughts and ideas, contributing to national standardization activities.
  • Canada
    : In Canada, on World Standards Day 2021, brochures were created and Webinar were held to inform the public of standards. In webinar they discussed the importance of standards and the impact of product quality on customer trust and organizational development.

Celebrating World Standard Day in Korea

About 160 member countries that are members of the International Organization for Standardization hold events to commemorate World Standards Day in each country. In Korea, the ceremony has been held every year since 2000, and government awards are given to individuals and organizations that have contributed to strengthening national competitiveness through domestic and international standardization activities. In 2020, on November 25, individuals and companies that were finally selected through document review and on-site audit were rewarded at the World Standards Day commemoration ceremony, and this year, the event will be held in November.
