ISO 14064
ISO 14064 is part of the ISO 14000 series of international standards for environmental management. It provides a framework that can be used to calculate and verify greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for governments, companies, regions and other organizations that want to quantify and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It also applies to organizations participating in voluntary programs such as regulation and emission trading system and accredited reporting. ISO 14064 consists of three parts as follows.
ISO 14064-1 – Specification with guidance at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals
ISO 14064-1 is a standard that sets out principles and requirements at the organization level for the quantification and reporting of GHG emissions and removals. Issued in 2006 and revised in 2018, it includes requirements for the design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organization's GHG inventory.
ISO 14064-2 – Specification with guidance at the project level for quantification, monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emission reductions or removal enhancements
ISO 14064-2 is a standard that sets out principles, providing guidance at the project level for the quantification, monitoring and reporting of activities intended to cause GHG emission reductions or removal enhancements. Issued in 2006, revised in 2019, and it includes requirements for planning a GHG project, identifying and selecting GHG sources, sinks and reservoirs (SSRs) relevant to the project and baseline scenario, monitoring, quantifying, documenting and reporting GHG project performance and managing data quality.
ISO 14064-3 – Specification with guidance for the verification and validation of greenhouse gas statements
ISO 14064-3 is a standard that sets out the principles and requirements for verifying and validating GHG statements. Issued in 2006, revised in 2019, and it applies to organizations, projects and product GHG statements. In particular, it describes the process for verification or validation, including verification or validation planning, assessment procedures, and the evaluation of organizational, project and product GHG statements.
Benefits of ISO 14064 standard
- • Increase consistency, transparency and credibility in GHG quantification, monitoring, reporting and reduction.
- • Identify and manage GHG-related responsibilities, assets and risks.
- • Facilitate trading of GHG allocations or credits.
- • Develop robust internal mechanisms to quantify, manage and report GHG emissions.
- • Build trust with consumers and stakeholders.
- • Provide the ability to track GHG emissions reduction or removal performance and progress.
Considerations when using the ISO 14060 standard
ISO 14064 is one of the series standards of ISO 14060, and when used, the following should be considered :
- • Enhances the environmental integrity of GHG quantification
- • Enhances the credibility, consistency and transparency of GHG quantification, monitoring, reporting, verification and validation
- • Facilitates the development and implementation of GHG management strategies and plans
- • Facilitates the development and implementation of mitigation actions through emission reductions or removal enhancements
- • Facilitates the ability to track performance and progress in the reduction of GHG emissions and/or increase in GHG removals
